I’m always cautious of hyperbolic harvest reports but 2018 has genuinely been the best year ever. It has been 10 years since we planted our vineyards and the weather has not always been kind – remember the wet and chilly 2012? – but this year has been the joint hottest on record according to the Met Office. The vines loved the hot sunshine and dry conditions of June and July, the respite of August prepared them for their burst of ripening. We started veraison (where the grapes change colour) on 3rd August and we started picking on 4th October and harvest finished on 17th October. This contrasts with years when we have only just started picking in mid-October, and on one occasion we were still harvesting the ‘Guy Fawkes Sparkler’ on 5th November.
There was a bumper crop with some of the bunch sizes being enormous. Dan weighed a single bunch of Chardonnay that was 585g. Much more importantly, the pressed juice was delicious and we are very hopeful of making some excellent wine. Can’t wait for the release date in 2023.
